How long does house painting take?

Typical timelines

A single bedroom with sound walls is usually a day, or a day and a half with woodwork. A living room with a feature wall and full trim is one to two days. A hallway, stairs and landing is typically two to three days because of access and the volume of woodwork. A three-bedroom house painted throughout, empty, is generally around a working week.

What causes delays

The main ones are unexpected preparation — wallpaper hiding damaged plaster, walls that need three coats after a dark colour, or damp discovered behind furniture — and decisions made mid-job. Colour changes after work starts are the most common cause of an extended timeline, because completed coats often have to be redone.

Drying and recoat times are non-negotiable. Cold, damp rooms slow everything down, particularly woodwork, and pushing a second coat on early causes a poor finish that will need to be corrected anyway.
